Costume jewellry was developed in the 18th century, mainly for the emerging middle classes and the wealthy who, for reasons of security, wore valuless jewellry while travelling. In the 1920s costume jewellry developed into an accessory in its own right rather than mere imitation. In the hands of Chanel and Schiaparelli it became witty and ostentatious. Following this period, new design approaches to costume jewellry produced fashionable pieces which were no longer thought of as second-rate. Various materials are employed, often painted imitations of silver and gold, as well as resins and other plastics, which imitated precious stones. As clothing changes, so does the demand for non-tradtional jewellry. Braclets, earrings and necklaces, as well as rings, have all been reinvented, many in structured or sculptural forms. Used in the 19th century as jewellry for evening wear, the choker came back into vogue in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Also known as the dog collar. Costume jewellry is now an integral part of the fashion scene. It is very collectible and high prices are commanded for exceptional designs.
